Abstract:
This assessment considers the potential archaeological implications of the proposed redevelopment of a plot of land at Heacham Manor Golf Course, Hunstanton, Norfolk. The site lies in an area of archaeological potential with a number of known archaeological sites present within the development boundary. These include an area excavated ahead of the construction of the houses to the north, which revealed evidence of Neolithic and later prehistoric settlement and cropmarks of probable late prehistoric to Roman date have been recorded across the area suggesting widespread settlement. The built development is confined to the northern half of the site, much of which appears to have already been archaeologically excavated, with the southern half of the site to be open ground crossed by a new access road. This leaves a middle strip, the southern half of the built up area, which may have an impact on any surviving below ground remains. However, this area has been subject to ridge and furrow ploughing during either the medieval or post-medieval period, which may have already had some impact on any remains that may be present. Given the previous excavation across the northern part of the site and the ridge and furrow ploughing across part of the site that may have impacted on the archaeological potential of the site, any below ground remains that may be present are considered to be of low-medium archaeological value.
