Abstract:
Three small areas (170 sq m, 54 sq m and 30 sq m) were mechancially stripped then subject to hand excavation, and a watching brief was maintained on the digging of a lift shaft. The excavations revealed almost continuous occupation from the late Saxon period to the present. 10th or 11th century features included rubbish pits and wooden buildings with cellars, and similar landuse (although with stone-footed buildings) continued through to the 14th century. The 15th century is less well represented but features of this period may have been removed by remodelling of the site for an early post-medieval garden. The site was once again built on in hte later post-medieval period.
