Abstract: |
Baseline information has been gathered within a 1km radius from the site boundary (hereby referred to as the ‘study area’). This search radius is considered sufficient to produce a comprehensive baseline for the site and will allow for an understanding of the archaeological potential and historic significance to be established, and subsequently for appropriate mitigation to be recommended for the Scheme regarding the historic environment.
This technical note has been informed by desk-based research, utilising the following sources:
● An examination of local, regional and national planning policies in relation to the historic environment;
● A search of the Historic England National Heritage List for England (NHLE) dataset for designated
heritage assets within the study area;
● A search of the West Berkshire HER for archaeological sites, archaeological findspots, locally listed
buildings, archaeological priority areas and archaeological event locations within the study area;
● A search of the relevant published and unpublished archaeological sources within the wider area via the
Archaeological Data Service (ADS);
● A search of the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) database for additional findspots within the study
area;
● An examination of relevant aerial imagery held by the National Collection of Aerial Photography;
● An examination of Google Earth Pro, for historic images;
● An examination of the British Geological Survey (BGS) data;
● An inspection of the cartographic evidence for the land use history of the site; and
● An examination of the other available online historic sources (identified in footnotes where relevant). This technical note has been undertaken to assess the likely historic environment impacts of development proposals at Ufton Nervet WTW. This has incorporated a review of the available data from the NHLE and West Berkshire HER within the study area.
Within the study area there is one grade I and eight grade II listed buildings, a registered park and garden and a scheduled monument. There is likely to be no impact on the significance of these assets, as there are no proposed physical changes to the assets or works that would impact their settings. The proposed location
of the Scheme is heavily screened with mature trees. Therefore, it is likely that there would be no intervisibility between works carried out at this location and the nearby designated assets. Therefore, there will be no impact to designated assets to their setting by any works carried out within this area.
The proposed location for the Scheme is situated within agricultural land which has had minimal disturbance, as evidenced by historical mapping and imagery. Any development at this location is likely to impact potential buried archaeological remains, where they survive. Any remains that survive are unlikely to be truncated in this area and would therefore be of a low to medium significance, depending on their date. |
