Abstract: |
A detailed gradiometer survey was conducted over land at Forest Farm, Chippenham, Wiltshire (centred on NGR 393737, 171840). The project was commissioned by Terence O'Rourke Limited on behalf of Gleeson Strategic Land. The aim was to establish the presence, or otherwise, and nature of detectable archaeological features in support of a planning application for the development of the site. The site comprises five arable and pasture fields located to the south of London Road, approximately 2.9 km to the south-east of Chippenham. The site covers an area of approximately 11.9 ha, with 2.6 ha of this area having already been surveyed during an earlier phase of works (Wessex Archaeology 2015a). This second phase of detailed gradiometer survey covered the remaining area of 9.3 ha.. The geophysical survey was undertaken between 28th September and 2nd October 2015 and, along with the results of the first phase, has demonstrated the presence of a number of anomalies of definite, probable and possible archaeological interest, along with regions of increased magnetic response and areas of ridge and furrow. The anomalies identified as being of archaeological interest are primarily ditch-like features with two distinct morphologies visible suggesting distinct phases of activity and use. These comprise either curvilinear and smaller rectangular enclosure ditches or distinct 'ladder' form ditches, the latter mainly located in the south-western part of the site. Areas of ridge and furrow have also been identified within these areas. The most complex areas of definite and potential archaeology are located in the south of the large central field and in the western most corner of the site. The remaining features detected include modern ploughing trends, field drains, areas of ferrous debris and at least two modern services. |
