Abstract: |
Four trial trenches, each measuring 50 m in length and 1.85 m wide, were excavated in level spits using a 360º excavator equipped with a toothless bucket, under the constant supervision and instruction of the monitoring archaeologist. Machine excavation proceeded until either the archaeological horizon or the natural geology was exposed. Where necessary, the base of the trench/surface of archaeological deposits were cleaned by hand. A sample of archaeological features and deposits identified was hand-excavated, sufficient to address the aims of the evaluation. The evaluation identified a limited number of archaeological features within the site, with features revealed in two of the four trenches. Where archaeological features were encountered they were observed to cut through the topsoil deposit suggesting late post-medieval or modern origins and relate to field boundaries and drainage features. |
