Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned to undertake an archaeological evaluation of a 224.61 ha linear scheme located between Milton Interchange on the A4130 and the B4015 north of Clifton Hampden, Oxfordshire. The development is substantial in scale and is broken down into several "Packages" for planning purposes which have been further broken down into plots which largely relate to existing fields. The Didcot Science Bridge package contained ditches relating to medieval to post-medieval field systems with a single Bronze Age ditch found in the south of the package. The Didcot to Culham River Crossing South package contained a concentration of Late Iron Age to Romano-British field ditches, trackside ditches and pits pertaining to settlement activity, although little evidence of structural remains were observed. Historic England cropmark data suggests settlement foci may have been located to the immediate north. The Didcot to Culham River Crossing North package contained very sparse archaeological remains, most of which relate to medieval to post-medieval agricultural activity. A single Neolithic pit was observed in the north of the package with three Romano-British ditches in the east. The Clifton Hampden Bypass package contained a concentration of Romano-British ditches towards the south of the package. A small number of Late Prehistoric pottery sherds were located amongst the Romano-British activity. Sparse field ditches and possible trackway in the north of the package were largely undated but likely can be attributed to the medieval to post-medieval period. Within this area a ditch was found to contained Bronze Age pottery sherds.
