Abstract: |
Evaluation: A total of 6 evaluation trenches of varying sizes were excavated in the western area of the Site. Their precise locations were determined as to investigate the geophysical anomalies identified during the GPR survey. The trenches were excavated using a tracked mini-digger machine with a
toothless bucket under constant archaeological supervision and ceased at the identification of significant archaeological remains, or where natural geology was encountered first. When machine excavation had ceased all trenches were cleaned by hand and archaeological deposits investigated, as outlined in the agreed Project Design.
Excavation: Due to the need to store excavated spoil on site, it was necessary to strip and excavate the Site in two phases. Phase one consisted of the stripping of the western half of the Site (approximately 0.3ha) under continuous archaeological supervision with top and sub soil stockpiled
on the eastern area. Excavation of the graves and any other
archaeological features that was present was then undertaken. When excavation on this area was completed to the satisfaction of WCAS and signed off, the area was backfilled with the stockpiled soil and the stripping of the remaining eastern portion of the Site (approximately 0.23 ha) was carried out, with spoil stockpiled in the western area. Excavation of archaeological features was then undertaken. The Site was then cleaned by hand, as appropriate, to enable an accurate plan to be produced. Further excavation of archaeological features or deposits was then undertaken by hand. The evaluation and excavation to the rear of 106-108 Cadley Road, Collingbourne Ducis, has substantially extended the known range of an Anglo-Sacon cemetery first excavated in 1974. The excavations revealed a further 78 inhumation burials, and at least four cremation burials, spanning the fifth to seventh centuries. This includes a high-status female bed-burial. |
