Abstract: |
Border Archaeology (BA) has been instructed to carry out a programme of Archaeological Observation (AO; Controlled Watching Brief) on ground works proposed to inform future sea defence works at the MOD Shoeburyness site in Essex (fig. 1). The proposed works will be phased along transects within three reaches of sea defence. The transects have been divided into categories A to F with varying levels of investigation associated with each category.
In brief, the works will comprise:
• concrete coring of specific locations on the embankment crest;
• approximately 127 static cone penetration (SCP) tests;
• excavation of approximately 38 trial pits (1 trial pit in each transect along category A, B, D and E);
• 92 window sample boreholes;
• 20 pick-up towed cable percussion boreholes;
• and three rotary boreholes (Category C – dam investigation works).
The excavation of the trial pits, which will be located in areas of previously undisturbed ground, is the only part of the works identified as appropriate for AO, as these have the potential to encounter unknown archaeological remains. The pits will measure up to 3m in length × 0.5m in width and will be excavated to a maximum depth of 1.5m below ground level. The removed spoil will temporarily be placed onto a tarpaulin (or similar) and will be used to backfill the pits in the order that it was excavated so as to reinstate the different horizons/layers to their prior locations; backfilling of the trial pits will be carried out on the same day as their excavation. The works comprised the excavation of eight trial pits in previously undisturbed ground. This was completed under archaeological supervision, using a mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless grading bucket. All of the trial pits revealed a similar sequence of deposits, namely topsoil and subsoil overlying two alluvial layers..
No features, finds or deposits of archaeological significance were encountered during the course of the AO within Reach 2 of the Shoeburyness Sea Defences. |
