Abstract: |
Border Archaeology (BA) was instructed to undertake an Archaeological Desk Based Assessment with regard to a planning application relating to the removal of two disused tennis courts and the erection of four residential terraced properties; comprising a total of nine residential flats at Bush Hill Park Tennis Club, 25-33 Abbey Road Enfield EN1 2QP.
This ADBA assesses the impact of the proposed development on buried heritage assets (archaeological remains). It forms an initial stage of investigation of the proposed development site and may be required in relation to the planning process, so that the local planning authority can formulate an appropriate response in the light of the impact upon any known or potential heritage assets. These are parts of the historic environment which are considered to be significant because of their historic, evidential or aesthetic and/or communal interest. The overall potential of the site in archaeological terms has been assessed as Moderate, with particular reference to encountering evidence of Romano-British remains. The potential to encounter evidence of prehistoric, medieval and post-medieval remains has been assessed as Low to Moderate. However, it is BA’s considered opinion that, prima facie, based on the available evidence, the archaeological potential of the site does not present an impediment to the development.
Recommendations: Given the Moderate archaeological potential of the site, it is recommended that an appropriate programme of archaeological work, the details of which to be agreed with the Greater London Archaeological Advisory Service, will be necessary to determine the extent, depth and significance of buried archaeological features and deposits across the site. |
