Abstract: |
Following geophysical survey by a third party and analytical earthwork survey by SAHS a series of open area excavations were carried out on the spur of land known as Brompton Castle Hill (a scheduled monument) and also Castle Hill House which is also on the spur of land but outside the Scheduled area The taken together, the excavations established the exceptional quality of survival of the archaeological remains on Castle Hill with significant depths of stratigraphy surviving. The excavations added significantly to our knowledge of the monument on Brompton Castle Hill. In particular, the discovery of a large masonry building incorporating elements of fine architectural detailing and a substantial precinct wall now firmly establishes the high status of the Castle Hill site in the medieval period, We can now be more confident that Castle Hill was the site of a medieval residence of manorial rank |
