Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in January 2020 at Bottisham Meadows, Bottisham, in Cambridgeshire. Sixteen trenches were excavated. The results of the evaluation correlate to some extent with the findings of the previous geophysical survey of the site, which identified anomalies indicative of farming activity, in the form of boundary ditches, concentrated towards the north of the site. Further linear anomalies representing former field boundaries were also identified intermittently across the north east and southern part of the site. The evaluation identified archaeological remains with no central focus across the site, comprising prehistoric pits in the east of site and ditches and pits of late Saxon/medieval date, as well as later pits and ditches, dated to the post medieval and modern period, found across the site. The most prominent feature was that of the human cremation-related feature (probable cremation burial), in roughly the centre of site which remains undated as it was not excavated any further than a palaeoenvironmental sample.
