Abstract: |
Fifty-two trial trenches were machine excavated in February 2019. Fourteen trenches contained archaeological features and deposits. The majority of the machine excavated trenches measured approximately 50m x 1.8m with exception of Trenches 1, 2 and 12 which measured approximately 25m x 1.8m, Trench 9 (originally Trench 9 & 10) was L-shaped in plan and measured approximately 100m x 1.8m and Trench 29 (originally Trench 29 & 30) was T-shaped in plan and measured approximately 25m x 1.8m east /west and 50m x 1.8m north/south. Trench 23 was only partially machine excavated due to a modern black plastic water trough feed pipe discovered running along the length of the trench limit during machine excavation. An archaeological trial trench evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in February 2019 at Land to the East of Glasshouse Lane, Kenilworth, Warwickshire. A total of fifty-two trial trenches were machine excavated. Fourteen trenches contained archaeological features and deposits. The remains of a curvilinear ditch were recorded within Trench 28, within the eastern limits of the Site. Based on its shape in plan and the finds recovered from its two fills this is likely to represent the remains of an enclosure ditch. The pottery assemblage comprised domestic material of Late Iron Age / Early Roman date and could indicate that former, perhaps contemporary, settlement may have been located in the vicinity of the Site, perhaps to the east. The Site likely represents agricultural activity on the periphery of Late Iron Age / Early Roman settlement. A ditch sequence was found in Trenches 43, 44, 45 and 46 and a similar ditch sequence in Trenches 51 and 52 further northwards. These ditch systems have been dated from the 17th to 20th centuries from the finds identified and are likely to represent historic field boundaries, some of which are visible on historic mapping. Further ditches and a posthole found within Trenches 6, 12, 17, 20 and 26 were undated but are likely to date to the same period. A stone-lined drain of solid construction discovered in Trench 31 has been dated from the 17th to 20th century |
