Abstract:
Three excavation areas (A-C) were opened within the site, representing the full accessible length of the new road. The routes of existing roads accessing the Airfield and Hullavington village could not be excavated An archaeological excavation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology between February and August 2020 for the New Access Road, Hullavington Airfield, Hullavington, Wiltshire. Three excavation areas were investigated, representing the full accessible length of the route of the proposed access road. The excavation revealed activity on site that was dated to the Late Bronze Age and Roman periods. Eight pits and two ditches dating to the Late Bronze Age were identified in Area B. Two further ditches containing Late Bronze Age pottery were excavated at the eastern end of Area A, along with a ditch, which contained a sherd of Roman pottery. A small number of undated pits, ditches and post-holes were excavated across the length of the proposed access road. The sparse distribution of features and the limited number and range of finds suggest light or seasonal Late Bronze Age occupation, perhaps related to grazing livestock. This appears to be compatible with occupation of this date in the Cotswold uplands more generally, and perhaps other upland areas in southern England such as the Marlborough Downs.
