Abstract: |
The archaeological strip and map exercise targeted the site of the former North Stoneham House. It took place between 7th and 25th January 2022 and uncovered the tops of the extant walls of North Stoneham House. The archaeological watching brief took place from 24th March to 9th May 2022 during the groundworks contractors’ enabling works to remove obstructions for piling. These groundworks removed the remaining walls of North Stoneham House apart from under an east-west access road and in a tree protection area. North Stoneham House was built c.1818 for John Fleming to the designs of the architect Thomas Hopper (1776-1856). The grand new mansion was built in Greek Revival style. Following the death of John Fleming in 1844, the family preferred to live at Chilworth Manor. North Stoneham House was used as an auxiliary hospital for wounded Belgian soldiers during the First World War. During the 1920s and 1930s, the house was divided into flats and inhabited by several families. In 1939, the mansion was demolished due to the poor condition of the building. The watching brief showed that the house and its outbuildings were built of brick. Stone was important in emphasising its grandiose facades with large columns probably in a yellow Corsham/Box type of Bath stone and steps, cornices and balustrades in grey Portland stone. Other columns were built of brick and covered with render. The house was roofed in North Welsh slate with some Westmoreland slate. Portland stone flagstones were used as well as some Tournai marble pavers from Belgium. The circuit of public rooms at North Stoneham House was at the south end of the building. Finds from this end of the building included many fragments of scagliola (plaster that resembles marble) as well as pieces of finely carved marble fireplaces including Carrara marble from Tuscany and black brecciated marble from Ashburton (Devon) or France/Belgium. The indications are that the public rooms were covered with scagliola and marble and were adorned with columns and sculptures. The watching brief showed that the main house had basement rooms while the outbuildings to the north were single storey without basements. The basements included wine cellars, coal stores, stores for paint and accommodation for servants. The structural remains comprised wall footings, basement walls and fireplaces, and material/architectural finds from its last phase of occupation until demolition in 1939. It was established that ground floor surfaces in the main house had been removed in 1939 so that the demolition rubble could infill the cellars. Ground floor surfaces were still intact in the outbuildings of the service range to the north and comprised brick setts and Portland stone flagstones. The demolition appears to have been carried out with a wrecking ball, with some burning of combustible debris afterwards. The quantity of material suggests that little was removed from the site, with most of the remains filling the basements. Fragments ranged in scale from intact pieces of the stone balustrade and sections of exterior dressed stonework to quantities of demolished brick, slate, render and plaster. Generally, items were in a pristine condition. |
