Abstract: |
MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) carried out a programme of archaeological investigation at Hecadeck Lane, Nether Broughton from June to August 2021 in advance of a proposed housing development. The excavations uncovered the remains of multi-phase settlement activity dating to the Early Medieval period, which comprised three timber structures and a series of a minimum of six agricultural enclosures. The site was later subdivided into four linear tenement plots in the Medieval period, which likely fronted onto Hecadeck Lane. Other medieval activity comprised at least four large pits of uncertain function, one of which may have acted as a well. The site went out of use in the late 13th or 14th century, at which point the site was utilised as part of the ridge and furrow open-field agricultural system. |
