Abstract: |
Evaluation The area of the site being developed by the London Borough of Greenwich is approximately 3650m². However, Approximately 1230m² had been truncated by preexisting basements. It was planned to excavate five 20 x 2m trenches located to give good overall coverage of the remaining area. However, due to truncation by modern obstructions Trench 4 was divided into three smaller trenches, 4A, 4B and 4C. Excavation was undertaken by a 360 degrees mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless bucket operating under direct archaeological supervision and proceeded to the natural geology or the top of the first archaeological horizon, whichever was encountered first. Deposits were then hand cleaned and investigated. The excavation and recording was carried out in accordance with the methodology outlined in the WSI for the project. Building survey The recovering has been undertaken at Level 1. Level 1 is relatively low level, usually used when a number of buildings are being rapidly recorded in a single phase. It frequently only covers the exteriors of the buildings (although can sometimes include interior) and is generally only photographic and descriptive in nature. As the buildings had already been lost prior to OA's commission the description of the buildings contained in this report are based on photographs supplied to OA which had previously been taken b the client. As part of the project the Greenwich Heritage Center at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich has been visited to undertaken some limited historical research. This has included a number of trade directories to determine what the buildings on the site were used for and examining photographs showing the buildings. The findings of previous historical research undertaken during the Environmental Impact Assessment undertaken 2006 on this site (and on several other projects within the vicinity) has also been included in this report. Further evidence has been gained from studying aerial photographs from Google Earth. Evaluation During February and May 2008, Oxford Archaeology undertook and archaeological evaluation by trial trenching on land between Wellington street and Love lane, Woolwich (NGR TQ 435 787) on behalf of the London Borough of Greenwich who having planning permission to develop the site to provide new civic offices. The trenching demonstrated that the development area was heavily truncated by modern basements and obstructions and no archaeological remains were found. Building Survey A large section of Woolwich town center is currently undergoing a long term, phased redevelopment which includes the construction of new commercial, residential and retail buildings as well as a new civic building. Oxford Archaeology has been commissioned by Greenwich Borough Council to produce a Level 1 building record of a group buildings facing onto Wellington Street which have been demolished in Phase 1 of redevelopment. The buildings had already been demolished prior to the commission but a series of photographs of buildings have been supplied to Oxford Archaeology and therefore this report is based on theses photographs. This buildings were listed and were not of great historical or architectural significance but they were on a major road close to the center of Woolwich and they would therefore have well-known to local people. In addition the buildings provided interesting examples of architectural styles from several different periods. In particular the Director General Public House dated from the mid 19th century, when Wellington Street was originally established, whereas the large neighboring civic building provided an interesting example of early 20th century public architecture. |
