Abstract: |
This report presents the results of a heritage assessment and a geophysical survey that were carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a proposed solar array at Connonbridge, East Taphouse, Cornwall. The desk-based assessment followed the guidance that is outlined in: Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment (CIfA 2014); and Understanding Place: Historic Area Assessments in a Planning and Development Context (English Heritage 2012). The heritage assessment followed the guidance that is outlined in: Conservation Principles: Policies and Guidance for the Sustainable Management of the Historic Environment (English Heritage 2008); The Setting of Heritage Assets (Historic England 2015); Seeing History in the View (English Heritage 2011); Managing Change in the Historic Environment: Setting (Historic Scotland 2010); and Guidelines for Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment: 3rd Edition (Landscape Institute 2013). The heritage impact assessment followed the guidance that is outlined in the Principles of Cultural Heritage Impact Assessment in the UK that was produced by CIfA, IHBC, and IEMA in July 2021. The geophysical survey followed the guidance that is outlined in: Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Geophysical Survey (CIfA 2014); and EAC Guidelines for the Use of Geophysics in Archaeology: Questions to Ask and Points to Consider (Europae Archaeologiae Consilium/European Archaeological Council 2016). The site is located c.500m to the south of East Taphouse and to the immediate north of the landfill/recycling site. The archaeological potential of the site and the potential impact upon it is medium for the northern field and low for the southern field. It is unlikely that any archaeological deposits or features are present on the site, though this is unknown. The presumed impact/effect on any potential archaeological resource on the site is estimated as slight to moderate. The indirect effects of the proposed development on the nearby heritage assets are assessed as negligible given that the site is located outside of any key views between the various prehistoric barrows and registered battlefield sites. The geophysical survey identified 3 groups of anomalies that comprised c.9 anomalies across the site. The anomalies were indicative of: a probable trackway/routeway beside the western boundary of the site; a number of instances of modern ground disturbance; and a removed field boundary that was associated with the extant field system. The results of the geophysical survey do not indicate the presence of any significant archaeological features or deposits on the site. As a result, no further archaeological works are recommended. |
