Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Sanctuary Group to undertake archaeological mitigation works comprising the excavation of 0.35 ha west of Southam Road, Banbury, Oxfordshire, OX16 2SB (centred on NGR 445450 242940). The work was carried out as a condition of planning permission, granted by Cherwell District Council (ref. 18/00273/OUT), for residential development on a site of approximately 6 ha. The excavation was undertaken in accordance with a written scheme of investigation (WSI), which detailed the aims, methodologies and standards to be employed for the fieldwork and post-excavation work (Wessex Archaeology 2022b). The WSI was approved by Oxfordshire County Archaeological Services (OCAS), on behalf of the Local Planning Authority (LPA), prior to the fieldwork. The excavation was undertaken between 23 August and 16 September 2022. A prior evaluation centred on NGR 445264 243046, undertaken at the present development site on 14th to 24th March 2022, comprised the excavation of 19 trial trenches, each measuring 30 m x 2 m (Wessex Archaeology 2022a, Unpublished report ref. 225061.3). Please see the relevant report for further methodological detail. Archaeological features were observed in three of the evaluation trenches including a Neolithic/Early Bronze Age pit, a posthole, and a gully for water management across the field. The excavation was targeted on the location of a suspected Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age pit that was partially exposed and investigated during trial trenching in March 2022. This feature was fully revealed and investigated during the excavation, revealing a substantial, sub-rectangular hollow containing Beaker pottery and worked flint, small amounts of fired clay and animal bone, as well as charcoal, charred cereal grain and the remains of various wild plant species. The feature is provisionally interpreted as the remains of a very rare, possibly unique (in Britain) Beaker domestic structure. No other archaeologically significant features or deposits were encountered.
