Abstract:
The trial trench evaluation will sample the Grid Connection Compound. This will be achieved using four trenches measuring 30m long and 1.8m wide with a contingency of 21m squared if required. The trenches have been designed in such a way as to test the Grid Connection Compound adequately. The trial trench plan has been checked against various factors on the ground (access and obstructions), should additional, currently unknown constraints become apparent, then the trenches may need to be moved to avoid these. The precise locations of the trenches may be altered to take into account local ground conditions. Utility Plans must always be checked prior to opening the trenches and trench locations will be scanned with a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) prior to excavation. Should the excavation of the trenches reach 1.2m in depth (or the limit of safe working depth be reached, which may be less than 1.2m in certain soil types) without natural geology being encountered, a machine dug sondage will be excavated in order to establish the depth of natural geology, except where former quarrying activity can be proved. All archaeological features or deposits encountered will be described fully on pro-forma individual context recording sheets, using standard methods of the archaeological contractor appointed. A stratigraphic matrix will be compiled to record the relationships of any archaeological features or deposits encountered and to indicate those features or deposits requiring further The Site will be subject to nine test pits measuring 1m x 1m. These are to be excavated through topsoil/overburden in order to reveal the underlying geology. The sections will be recorded. Specifically, the depth and character of the overburden will be recorded. The purpose is to inform mitigation decisions for the solar farm, to be made by the Archaeology Officer. This investigation comprised the excavation of four evaluation trenches and nine test pits over an area of 36.2ha. The development site lay within the hinterland of a number of medieval settlemts such as Grove and Whaddon, as such, there is very little evidence for human activity within the excavated areas. A geophysical survey of the area did not produce much evidence for potential cut features beyond that of ridge and furrow and several anomalies (Abrams 2022: 8). During this investigation, a single cut feature was encountered within the footprint of Trench 1, Pit [103]. This small pit contained a small amount of charcoal but no datable artefacts. Stratigraphical evidence would suggest that it pre-dated the construction of the Grand Junction Canal; however, no further date could be attributed to it. The construction of the Grand Junction Canal to the southwest of the evaluation trenches had an impact on the stratigraphic composition of the site as a thin layer of imported soil could be seen within Trenches 1-3. Artefacts including pottery, a copper alloy button, slate, ceramic building material (CBM) and a piece of clay pipe recovered from this layer would indicate it was late post-medieval in date, coinciding with the construction of the Canal and it is likely that soil from the excavation of the canal was deposited on the surrounding fields. This investigation comprises a small percentage of the overall field and it is possible that the trenches fell between widely dispersed features. Due to the lack of datable material, none of the research aims for this project could be addressed
