Abstract:
As part of a planning application to create a new burial ground, with associated infrastructure, on land south of Blackburn Road, Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, Greenlane Archaeology was commissioned to carry out an archaeological desk-based assessment of the site. The known and unknown archaeological potential of the area has been assessed using various sources, including the Lancashire Historic Environment Record and early maps, and a site visit was carried out in order to make a brief assessment of the site. The work was undertaken in April 2023. The site comprises c34ha to the south of Blackburn Road to the western edge of Oswaldtwistle and has remained largely undeveloped since at least the mid-19th century. The HER records 34 sites of archaeological interest, including a reservoir and quarry associated with the Stanhill Brick Works that extend into the site. The site is considered to have potential for previously unknown archaeological remains to be present, specifically of medieval and post-medieval date. The site visit revealed that the area comprises a large group of pasture fields mostly sloping downhill from Stanhill to the south towards Blackburn Road to the north. No specific feature of archaeological interest were identified, although it is evident that parts of the early field systems still survive and features relating to them. The area clearly has some, albeit limited, potential for previously unknown archaeological remains to be present, in particular relating to the former field systems, although the significance of these is uncertain. Elements relating to a former quarry and brickworks are present in part of the site, and other features relating to this may also be present.
