Abstract: |
Prior to submission of a planning application for the construction of seven industrial units on land at Galgate Mill, Chapel Lane, Galgate, Lancashire, Greenlane Archaeology was commissioned to produce a heritage statement for the site. The known and unknown archaeological potential of the area has been assessed using various sources, including the Lancashire Historic Environment Record and early maps. In addition, a site visit was carried out in order to make a brief assessment of the site. The work was undertaken in March and April 2023. The site is on the north-eastern edge of the village of Galgate, which lies c5km south of Lancaster. There is evidence for activity from the early prehistoric period in the local area, and a large enclosure of Iron Age date has been excavated nearby. A large quantity of medieval pottery was also discovered during excavations across the road from the site in 1998, and there is evidence that elements of the local field system might be of medieval origin. The HER records 24 known sites of archaeological interest, almost all of which are of post-medieval date and many relating to the industrial history of Galgate. The site is considered to have potential for previously unknown archaeological remains to be present, specifically of medieval and post-medieval date. The map evidence shows that it is situated between a former silk mill complex to the south and Ellel House to the north, which was previously occupied by the mill owner. The west side of the site was occupied by the mill pond for the silk mill in the late 19th century. The site visit revealed that the area has been modified by the creation of a car park over the west side and is currently used for uncertain industrial purposes on the east side. The impact of the proposed scheme is considered likely to be minimal on any known archaeological remains, with the exception of the former mill pond, but there is still some potential for previously unknown archaeological remains to be present. The impact on the setting of the adjoining listed buildings – Ellel House and the silk mill, is also considered to be relatively minor due to the now enlarged scale of the former and industrial nature of the latter, and the position of the proposed development, set back from the road. However, additional screening would potentially be beneficial. |
