Abstract:
A total of ten evaluation trenches were excavated within the proposed development area. The trenches were located in order to provide a representative sample of the site, as well as to test various geophysical anomalies. Non-significant overburden was removed, under constant archaeological supervision, to the top of archaeological remains or the underlying natural deposits, whichever was encountered first. This was achieved using a 360º tracked mechanical excavator, equipped with a toothless grading bucket. Features and spoil tips were scanned both visually and by metal detector for finds. The evaluation has identified the presence of a substantial ditch and bank with Medieval origins, which correlated with the bank previously recorded on the 1st edition OS map. Also present were in-situ chalk walls for a former building; most likely of late Post-medieval date, along with significant late Post-medieval/Modern disturbance in the south eastern side of the site which might be linked to the demolition of the former buildings in this area. On the edge of Trench 8 was a chalk and stone built well which is also marked on the 1st edition OS map
