Abstract:
Areas totalling around 2.5ha of land across three fields were stripped mechanically under archaeological supervision and archaeological features investigated by hand. The excavation revealed features of predominantly post-medieval date and generally relating to water management and stabilising frequently inundated areas of the site. Four oval pits with evidence of burning are interpreted as clamp kilns and date to the early Medieval period; a fifth burnt feature is radiocarbon dated to the Iron Age and is interpreted as a possible forge. A modest assemblage of prehistoric worked flint was collected.
