Abstract:
Methods The footprint of the Staff House is to be reduced by c. 400-500mm in preparation for the laying of a concrete slab. The foundations for the Artist’s Studio will be piles supporting a suspended floor slab. As the footprint of the building is potentially located within a tree root protection zone, 750mm square test pits will be hand excavated at the site of each pile, by arboriculturists to monitor the impact on the roots. The pits may be relocated should the potential damage be deemed too great. Test pits 750mm square will be excavated at various points along the drain run, which itself will be pulled using a mini digger fitted with a toothless bucket, though at a later date. The line of the drainage illustrated is indicative and may vary depending on the results of the test pits. The methods used will be as follows:  All ground reduction and landscaping with the potential to affect archaeological deposits will be carried out under archaeological supervision.  All drainage test pits will be carried out under archaeological supervision.  Pile test pits will be hand excavated by arboriculturists, to the natural geology after which they will be cleaned and inspected for archaeological features. Initially this will happen with an archaeologist present, but may be subsequently scaled down to inspection once complete, depending on the accuracy of the hand digging.  A contingency for the preservation or further investigation of any remains encountered  The analysis of the results of the archaeological work, with provisions for the subsequent production of a report and an archive, and the publication of the results, as appropriate  Such other provisions as may be necessary to protect the archaeological interests of the site.  Excavation methodology and all other items will remain as the existing WSI (Watson 2018) In February 2019 KDK Archaeology Ltd undertook the excavation of a series of slots at Garden House, Cottered, Hertfordshire. These slots were excavated in response to a mitigation strategy which addressed the unmonitored works undertaken on the site. The ground reduction for the main dwelling was to a uniform level of 1.3m below ground floor level of the existing dwelling and 0.3m below foundations. This resulted in the truncation of the natural geology by up to 0.87m. All but the deepest cut archaeological remains present within the levels excavated below the house structure would have been destroyed in the initial excavation. Within the slots, two archaeological features which possibly predate the modern period were exposed, a posthole to the north of the site and a shallow gully to the west. In addition, a single sherd of possible mediaeval black sandy coarse ware pottery was recovered from a stratigraphic layer. Further work was carried out in February 2020 comprising of the excavation of a series of slots and test pits for piling and services related to the Staff House. This work also formed part of the mitigation strategy. No archaeological features or finds were present in any of the areas investigated.
