Abstract:
Archaeological Evaluation by Trial Trenching was undertaken by MAP Archaeological Practice Ltd., under instruction from Barratt David Wilson Homes, to evaluate the surviving sub-surface archaeology on land at Whitechapel Road, Cleckheaton, between the 27th – 31st January 2020. The geophysical survey undertaken in 2019 demonstrated the potential for archaeological remains on the site. All work was undertaken in accordance with West Yorkshire Archaeological Advisory Service Written Scheme of Investigation. The site was 4.5 hectares in size with 2.89 hectares available for evaluation. Seventeen Evaluation Trenches were excavated, seven 50m by 2m and ten 25m by 2m in size. Deposits of topsoil and subsoil were removed by mechanical excavator to reveal clay sandand limestone natural deposits. The five trenches contained remains of furrows, seven trenches contained land-drains and there were areas of modern disturbance in three trenches. No archaeology recorded nor finds from this site.
