Abstract:
This report sets out the results of an Archaeological Strip and Record that was carried out by MAP Archaeological Practice Ltd. on land at Hillside Way, West Lutton, North Yorkshire (SE 93208 69537) on the 9th and 10th of October 2017. The work was undertaken in advance of residential development, following a recommendation made by the Principal Archaeologist of North Yorkshire County Council, that ‘an archaeological strip, map and record is undertaken in advance of development’. The Development Area measured 0.4 hectares and was excavated by machine and by hand. Archaeological deposits were located in the south-eastern corner of the development site. A shallow gully, almost rectilinear in plan, measured between 0.25m and 0.07m in depth and had been truncated by the machine along part of its western edge. The fills (003, 005, 007 and 009) all consisted of a mid-reddish brown slightly silty clay which contained no archaeological finds and appeared sterile. No additional features were identified within the stripped area to suggest a function or date of the gully.
