Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) during groundworks associated with a toilet installation at the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Chiselborough, Somerset (Figure 1). This work took place at the request of the Parochial Church Council - PCC (the Client), and was carried out by S. Stevens on 7th November 2023 in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (Boyd 2023) and in consultation with the South West Heritage Trust (SWHT) and Dioecian Advisory Committee (DAC). Within the trench were two drains, a ceramic pipe appearing to be in current use, running from a downpipe in the exterior corner of the building and narrowly missing the trench, appearing in section at c.0.15m deep, and most likely running north-north-west (Figures 1 and 3). The second was a probable earlier drain, disturbed by the excavator, and running approximately west-south-west to east-north-east through the trench, lying at c.0.45m deep. It too was ceramic but of a denser material than that of the ‘live’ pipe, with a top and lower half, each having a ’v’-shaped profiles, laid in sections (Figures 1 and 2). No other archaeological features or deposits were identified and no finds were recovered from site.
