Bromborough Village: Test Pitting Report
D Paton
Gary L Duckers
J Kirton
Discovering Bromborough aims to bring the community of a suburban village together to explore an unknown, incredibly exciting past. The project will see a large series of test-pits dug throughout the historic core of the village, with residents, schools, local societies and people from a range of backgrounds coming together to learn about a unique heritage that belongs to them all. Whilst overseen by heritage professionals, Discovering Bromborough is being led by the community and is indeed the very definition of community archaeology - providing training, learning opportunities, outdoor activities and renewing a sense of community pride in a place that has been affected by empty shops, social deprivation and anti-social behaviour in recent years.

Dig Blacon: Test Pitting Report
J Kirton
Dig Blacon was a Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) funded community archaeology project conducted by Big Heritage C.I.C. on behalf of CWAC's Public Health Team. The public element of the project commenced in June 2015 and concluded at the end of October 2015. Excavation was undertaken between 11th September and 23rd of October 2015. The project was primarily a test pitting exercise focused on the north-east area of Blacon Estate, to the north west of Chester (NGR SJ 384 675). Twenty test pits were excavated, supported by geophysical survey. These were undertaken in residential and business premises and on open public land.

Geophysical Survey for Waking the Legions
L Swinbank
F Pope-Carter
The project used non-invasive survey methods, res, mag and GPR, to re-examine the excavation and interpretation of Chester's Roman fort undertaken in the 1920's and 1930's at Deanery Field north of Chester Cathedral (NGR: SJ40576 66678), one of the only surviving open spaces within the walled town of Chester. The survey results demonstrated the presence of surviving archaeology that appeared to mirror the Roman army barrack blocks uncovered in the 19th century and a number of features that did not conform to the projected layout.

Geophysical Survey Report MSSJ53 of Land north of Woodchurch CofE Primary School Birkenhead, Merseyside
M Fortuny Torruella
The Woodchurch Big Dig was a community archaeology project conducted by Big Heritage C.I.C. on behalf of Woodchurch Church of England Primary School. The public element of the project commenced in October 2016 and concluded at the end of June 2017. Excavation was undertaken between 7th October and 3rd of November 2016. The project was a test pitting exercise focused on the historic core of Woodchurch (NGR SJ 27584 86871). Fifteen test pits were excavated, supported by geophysical survey. These were undertaken in residential and business premises. The project demonstrated that geophysical survey can be successfully implemented in the area. However, due to significant re-landscaping of the open areas little survives of notable archaeological interest. The test pitting was more successful in detecting earlier activity at the core of the village. Ceramic material was recovered, dating from the 13th century onward, which is comparable with the date of the upstanding Holy Cross Church at the centre of the study area. Activity appears to increase during the 15th-17th centuries, with a surge in activity noted from the 19th century onward.
