Stainmore: the archaeology of a North Pennine pass

A report on the archaeological investigation of Bowes Moor in County Durham as part of the improvement of the A66 trans-Pennine trunk road. The chapters are arranged chronologically and report on findings from the prehistoric, Roman, post-Roman, medieval and post-medieval periods along with studies of the finds and the changing landscape and environment. The project was concerned with all aspects of human activity in the Stainmore Pass, from the Mesolithic through to recent agricultural and industrial use. An important element was the programme of palynological and pedological analysis undertaken to accompany the detailed landscape evaluation and series of excavations of sites immediately threatened by road construction; the project involved the full recording of five standing buildings, detailed survey and excavation of a total of sixteen sites, and the survey of eleven others. Full accounts of these, together with summaries of the palaeoenvironmental investigations, are supported by reviews of the existing archaeological record, the geological background, and place-name evidence.
