Introduction

Archaeological Watching Brief, Cornhill House: West facing baulk of firepit
Archaeological Watching Brief, Cornhill House: West facing baulk of firepit

This collection comprises images from an archaeological watching brief at Cornhill House, Cornhill-on-Tweed, undertaken by Border Reivers Archaeology Unit in June 2020.

The watching brief became a retrospective recording of works which were carried out without monitoring and further monitoring required by the Assistant County Archaeologist were not carried out. The exercise returned multiple deposits of made ground and dumped material, which may have been put down to consolidate wet ground. Some of this material may be demolition material from works on the house to remove the return of the NW wing, other deposits seem to be mine waste, and midden material that may have been brought from the village. Two possible relict surfaces were seen and two features, a former stream (12) and a vaulted possible cistern, were identified.
