Introduction

Statue and plinth viewed from the east.
Statue and plinth viewed from the east.

This collection comprises reports, records, images, CAD files, and a laser scan from the building survey of the Robert Stephenson statue conducted prior to it's dismantling in line with HS2 enabling works. The survey was carried out by Mott MacDonald and MOLA Headland Infrastructure from July to October 2020 at the Euston Station Forecourt in the London Borough of Camden.

Project Summary

Recording has been undertaken in accordance with Historic England guidance for the recording of historic buildings, as per the requirements of the Heritage Agreement Method Statement. HS2 Technical Standards (Specification for Historic Environment Investigations, Document number HS2-HS2-EV-STD-000-000035) has been adhered to during the recording exercise. The HS2 Technical Standards informed the development of this method statement but are not material to or required by the Heritage Agreement.

A Level 3 analytical record is required for the asset. This has been specified in accordance with guidance in the Historic England document, which identifies that assets requiring dismantling prior to re-erection will require either a Level 3 or Level 4 record (Historic England, 2016). Given that the structure is Grade II listed, Level 3 has been selected because the statue of Robert Stephenson is a Grade II listed asset, which requires detailed understanding of its history, fabric, setting and significance, in order to select an appropriate location for its re-erection. In addition, the Level 3 record will provide the requisite details to inform the process of sensitively reassembling the statue.

MOLA Headland Infrastructure (MHI) also undertook a Level 3 Historic Building survey for the Robert Stephenson statue and its setting on the 10-11th of January 2018. The building recording was undertaken in accordance with specific guidance produced by HS2, namely the Technical Standard Specification for historic environment investigations (HS2-HS2-EV-STD-000-000035) and the Generic Written Scheme of Investigation: Historic Environment Research and Delivery Strategy (GWSI: HERDS) (HS2-HS2-EV-STR-000- 000015).

Re-Use Value Statement

This archive provides a comprehensive descriptive, analytical and visual record of the Statue of Robert Stephenson and its setting as of 2020. It can provide information for any future research regarding the asset, and its setting, which has recently been removed as part of enabling works of HS2. The digital archive can also be of benefit to the management of any future works to the asset, including determining its future location, which may require an understanding of its design and materials, as well as its significance.
