Introduction

This collection comprises of site photographs, archive decision sheets and site records from a trial trench evaluation and metal detector survey carried out by COPA (Cotswold Oxford Pre-Construct Archaeology) at North Lower Thorpe, Northamptonshire during January 2018.

Metal Dectector Survey Summary

The metal detector survey was undertaken on land located north-west of Lower Thorpe, Northamptonshire, to assess the archaeological potential of the Site to contain metal artefacts of archaeological significance, particularly those related to the 1469 Battle of Edgcote, which took place nearby. The south-eastern corner of the registered battlefield is located approximately 200m to the north-west of the survey area. The Site comprises a single land parcel, measuring c. 1.38ha within the eastern part of an arable field. The survey was intended to contribute to the following GWSI: HERDS objectives:

  • Objective KC18: Explore the evidence for increasing social complexity in the archaeological record in the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age, and identify patterns of intra-regional and regional variation.
  • Objective KC37: Investigate the battlefield at Edgcote to locate and study and features arising out of the conflict, and in particular the potential for artefact scatters and battlefield burial grounds.

Trial Trench Evaluation Summary

The trial trench evaluation was required to identify the location, extent, survival and significance of any heritage assets of archaeological interest within the Site and will contribute to the following specific GWSI: Historic Environment Research and Delivery Strategy (HERDS) objectives:

  • KC5: Identifying settlement location and developing models for settlement patterns for the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Early Bronze Age.
  • KC10: Provide further understanding of the transition between a mobile pattern of settlement in the Early Bronze Age to the development of fixed settlement and enclosure, in the Middle and Late Bronze Age.
  • KC15: Can we identify regional patterns in the in the form and location of Late Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements across the route, and are there associated differences in landscape organisation and enclosure?
  • KC40: Identify patterns of change within medieval rural settlement from the 11th to mid-14th century.
  • KC35: Investigate the impacts on rural communities of social and economic shocks in the mid-14th century and thereafter and their contribution to settlement desertion.
  • KC37: Investigate the battlefield at Edgcote to locate and study any features arising out of the conflict, and in particular the potential for artefacts scatters and battlefield burial grounds.

Re-Use Value Statement

The location, extent, survival and significance of any heritage assets of archaeological interest on this site have been captured in this dataset. This can inform future research into the archaeology and practices within the site and surrounding landscape, but also for the county as a whole.
