Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Introduction

This collection comprises text, images, vector data, spreadsheets and site records from a trial trench evaluation undertaken by Headland Archaeology Ltd at Spella House, Boddington, Northamptonshire between December 2020 and August 2021.

Project Summary

The Site lies within the Greatworth to Lower Boddington area and is encompasses two parcels of land: C32040 and C32043 A total of 63 trenches were excavated over several visits. The fills of these features produced a very limited quantity of LBA-MIA pottery, lithics, CBM and animal bone. The trenching targeted most of the previously identified geophysical anomalies however, features appeared heavily truncated and existed at shallow depths due to extensive ridge and furrow and ploughing activities.

Re-Use Value Statement

Further investigation of the enclosure identified by the trial trenching evaluation is considered to have some potential to contribute to Specific Objectives. Specifically, this could provide more secure dating for the features, whether by artefact recovery or scientific dating; and could provide more information on the site economy in relation to the exploitation of livestock. This could in turn contribute in future to broader regional studies of settlements of this period and type. It is possible that some of this information could be obtained by scientific dating of archaeobotanical materials recovered during the evaluation.

Please note that while the HS2 sitecode found in the records included in this collection is 1C20SPELTT, the correct one is 1C20SPETT.
