Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Introduction

Overview shot of St Mary’s Church
Overview shot of St Mary’s Church

This collection comprises site record and GeoTIFF data from a Geoarchaeological Assessment at St Mary's Churchyard, Stoke Mandeville South Embankment, Buckinghamshire. The work was undertaken by L-P Archaeology between 2018 to 2022.

The content includes the borehole logs and two lidar images of St Mary’s Church and Churchyard. The site archive, comprising written, drawn and digital records, along with finds and environmental materials, will be deposited with a museum archive in accordance with HS2 policy.

Project Summary

The objective of the investigation is to identify the extent and character of any surviving archaeological remains within the Site and to inform an archaeological resource assessment of its knowledge value and ability to contribute to Specific Objectives. The outcomes of the investigation will be used to inform the requirement and strategy of further archaeological investigation. Where present the investigation will define the character, extent, quality, preservation and significance of the archaeology in order to determine its potential to contribute to Specific Objectives set out in the GWSI: HERDS.

The aims of the geoarchaeological assessment are to:

  • Recover deposit sequence, samples and information regarding ground water levels across this area. Hand power auger survey in selected locations across the area is considered to be the minimally intrusive way of gathering environmental information from this sensitive site with minimal impact on archaeological deposits including human remains.
  • Combine existing GI information with site specific information produced by the borehole investigation to produce an overall model of the thickness and complexity of any archaeological levels on the Site;
  • Assess the archaeological and palaeoenvironmental potential of any archaeological deposits that are revealed;
  • Suggest measures, if appropriate and feasible, for further archaeological investigation to mitigate identified significant impacts;
  • Identify the potential survival of human remains within the burial ground around the church and identify the depth of archaeological deposits;
  • Identify the potential survival of medieval and post-medieval remains of Stoke Mandeville including the depth of archaeological deposits; and contribute to the delivery of GWSI: HERDS Specific Objectives.

Re-Use Value Statement

The datasets created in this project were used to prepare future investigation at St Mary’s Church. The final datasets will be integrated into those that will be produced during the new mitigation works.
