Introduction

SW facing Section of ditch [004]
SW facing Section of ditch [004]

This collection comprises of images, spreadsheets, GIS data, site records and Harris matrices from an archaeological mitigation carried out by Connect Archaeology at Radstone Manor Farm, Northamptonshire (1C20RADAR) between 31st March and 23rd July 2021.

Project Summary

This archaeological mitigation followed the trial trench evaluation which was carried out between 17 June and 13 August 2020 in the agricultural fields to the west of Radstone, designated as land parcel C30017. The results of that fieldwork (Document no. 1EW03-FUS-EV-REP-CS07_CL12-037120) indicated an area of increased archaeological activity which was consequently selected as a location for this archaeological mitigation by a strip and record excavation.

The mitigation area covered a plot measuring 0.78ha, designated as land parcel C30049. The aims of the Archaeological Recording were to; understand the impact of agricultural regimes on earlier activity; recover a more substantial artefact and environmental assemblage to provide more accurate economic information and dating evidence; further investigate the medieval manorial complexes; and to contribute to the delivery of GWSI: HERDS Specific Objectives (Document no. (HS2-HS2-EV-STR-000-000015).

Reuse Value Statement

The Radstone mitigation archive can be considered as part of the wider HS2 archive and as such has re-use value. The site has value on its own as it identified Medieval and Post-Medieval features. The evidence contributes to the corpus of such sites in Britain. The site was previously evaluated and the evidence from the evaluation will be valuable in conjunction with the evidence from the excavation.
