Overview

Interview in progress, East Street Valletta
Interview in progress, East Street Valletta

Fieldwork and data collection was conducted, in situ, in three sessions, between January 2021 and February 2022, mostly coinciding with breaks in local COVID lockdowns when travel to Malta was possible. Participants were recruited in a number of different ways, from social media, personal connection, and through a email callout involving a local heritage society. In all 19 interviews were conducted. Participants were selected on the basis of their residential relationship with Valletta, from long-term residents, recent arrivals, and a number of local non-residents. Rather than being static interviews, the methodology adopted was designed as a series of participant-led walks around the city. These walks were created by the interviewees, who were asked to select a starting and ending point for the walk, and to think about places in between that mattered to them. The route was defined by the participants themselves, and they were asked to keep to a maximum of 45min-1hr. To capture the interviews, video and audio recording was utilized. The data files were edited together using Adobe Premier to produce the 19 video files stored in this archive.
