This collection comprises of images, CAD data, spreadsheets and site records from an archaeological excavation and recording carried out by MOLA-Headland Infrastructure (MHI) during December 2019 at the site of the demolished, Grade II listed, Fox and Grapes Public House, 16 Freeman Street, Birmingham.
This work was undertaken in accordance with a method statement, and project specific addendum to that method statement, that aimed to achieve as much as was safely possible in the light of serious concerns over the stability of the building. MHI carried out the excavation of backfilled material from the cellar in order to record the remaining structural elements.
Due to the nature of the excavation only room C4 was fully exposed. Room C3 was partially exposed; neither of the eastern rooms C1 and C2 were excavated fully and none of their structural remains were visible. No further archaeological work is currently proposed. Whilst it may be possible to answer more of the questions posed in relation to the phasing of the building were further works to be undertaken, logistically this would be problematic as the building fronts onto a live public footpath against which an excavation to c.2.5m bgl would need to be made.
Given that entry to the excavation would be prohibited and accurate measurements, survey and cleaning would not be possible (as with this phase of work), it is unlikely that the benefits would be substantial enough to warrant such an exercise.
