Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Introduction

This collection comprises site photographs, vector drawings, laser scanning data and an archive decision record from historic building and setting recording at Hill Farm carried out by COPA (Cotswold Oxford Pre-Construct Archaeology) on behalf of High Speed Two Ltd. in September 2020. Work forms part of Phase One of the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail project.

Project Summary

The aims and objectives of the historic building recording set out in the Project Plan and the Location Specific Written Scheme of Investigation were to investigate and record the character, extent, significance and setting of buildings at Hill Farm. The recording covered four buildings: the farmhouse, barn, barn or stable and barn or machinery storage (Buildings 1 to 4)

3.1.2 The objective was to create a Level 2 record of the buildings at Hill Farm as defined in Understanding Historic Buildings: A guide to good recording practice (Historic England, 2016). It was decided to record the buildings to this level owing to the potential for the recording to contribute to Specific Objectives regarding the development of post-medieval farms in this region, and the community of Streethay, particularly if the investigation confirmed that one of the barns (Building 4) was a community slaughterhouse.

3.1.3 The aims of the building recording as set out in the Project Plan were to:

  • identify the uses of the buildings, and any changes in their functions over time;
  • identify historic building materials, architectural forms, etc. that indicate when the buildings were constructed;
  • record the significance of the assets and their setting;
  • record the extent of building remains;
  • record the key aspects of the asset’s setting and their contribution to the asset’s significance;
  • create a lasting report of the building(s) and their setting; and
  • contribute to the delivery of GWSI: HERDS Specific Objectives as specified in Section 3.2.

3.2 Contribution to GWSI: HERDS Specific Objectives.

3.2.1 All historic environment work on HS2 is guided by the Generic Written Scheme of Investigation:

  • Historic Environment Research and Delivery Strategy (GWSI: HERDS) (Ref HS2-HS2-EV-STR- 000-000015) and the Technical Standard specification for historic environment investigations (HS2-HS2-EV-STD-000-000035). Its purpose is to establish the objectives and mechanisms for designing and carrying out all historic environment related investigations, so that the work has specific aims, rather than an approach of simply mitigating impacts in order to collect information.

3.2.2 The aim of the historic building survey of Hill Farm was to create knowledge and outputs that would contribute to the following GWSI: HERDS Specific Objectives:

  • KC51: How do 19th and 20th century recreation and community buildings reflect social and economic change and contribute to community identity? Can different trajectories in the development of these amenities be recognised?
  • KC52: Understanding the pattern, form and function of post-medieval rural vernacular architecture: can we identify regional, intra-regional or temporal variations?

Re-Use Value Statement

The location, extent, survival and significance of any heritage assets of archaeological interest on this site have been captured in this dataset. This can inform future research into the archaeology and practices within the site and surrounding landscape, but also for the county as a whole.
