Title: Plan of archaeological trial trenching excavations at Water Orton Filename: 215952_archive Description: Remains were sparse overall, with approximately three quarters of the trenches (78%) proving to be archaeologically blank. Area 1 contained two burnt mounds of likely Bronze Age date, set some 200 m apart, along with pits containing redeposited burnt mound material. Area 2 contained an enclosure and former field boundaries, probably representing the remains of a co‐axial field system; this was set on a north–south/east–west alignment. The field system is poorly dated but, based on a small number of pottery sherds in trenches 50 and 57 and a glass bead also found in trench 50, it appears to be of Late Iron Age/Romano‐British date. 8.1.2 The finds assemblage from the site is very small and consists largely of pottery and ceramic building material, with chronological foci in the late iron Age/Romano‐British and post‐medieval/modern periods. Apart from one waterlogged sample recovered from an undated ditch, and assemblages of charcoal from the burnt mounds, the environmental evidence from the trenches is generally very sparse |
