This collection comprises of images, spreadsheets, CAD data and site records from an archaeological mitigation carried out by Wessex Archaeology on land south of Birmingham Road, Coleshill between February and June 2022.
The mitigation exposed and recorded archaeological remains comprising a possible Iron Age pit alignment and a pit that contained sherds of Iron Age pottery. Two field systems dating to the Romano‐British period were identified in the north of the site, along with a stone structure. A Romano‐British tile kiln, which was enclosed within a double‐ditched square enclosure was revealed and recorded in the south of the site. A scatter of pits was recorded across all three mitigation areas, some of which were dated to the Romano‐British period. Post‐medieval plough furrows were also recorded in all three areas. The earliest datable evidence from the mitigation area was a probable Mesolithic or Early Neolithic flint blade, though this was a residual find recovered from a Romano‐British ditch fill.
The majority of finds recovered from ditches, pits and the tile kiln dated to the Romano‐British period and comprised an assemblage of 2nd to 4th‐century pottery, as well as a large collection of ceramic building material (CBM), of which a large portion originated from the Romano‐British tile kiln. A small fragment of Romano‐British glass bottle was also recovered from a ditch fill, along with a fragment of glass intaglio and the corroded remains of a hipposandal. Environmental evidence recovered from a number of archaeological deposits showed that the site was located close to an area of grassland and arable fields during the Romano‐British period, with crop processing activity occurring on or near the site.
