Overview

The collection was divided into two main sections:

1- Princely Burials

Sutton Hoo

One of the most famous sites in England, the Sutton Hoo project archive brings together a site atlas, various reports, and an album of slides from the excavation campaigns between 1938 to 2001. The archive also provides a short bibliography on Sutton Hoo, as well as a link to the Sutton Hoo Society website, which has a more extensive list of publications and pictures of a selection of the finds, including the Sutton Hoo helmet.

The Prittlewell Princely Burial

The Anglo-Saxon princely burial at Prittlewell, found intact during the 2003 excavations, is a find of international significance – the richest and most important Anglo-Saxon burial found since the 1930s. Images of the artefacts found at the site can be viewed through an image search. The detailed accounts of the burial structures, the burial and the grave goods highlight the religious, economic, political, and social structures of the nearby settlement.

Saltwood Tunnel (North of), ARC SLT 98C (Cemetery Area)

The cemetery area of sixty-three early Anglo-Saxon burials includes two elaborate princely burials and fifteen other weapon graves. The cemetery was used for male, female, and juvenile burials, with a variety of grave types and grave goods. The data from this archive can be used in conjunction with the other princely burial sites, as well as another Anglo-Saxon burial site in Saltwood (see below).

2- Other Cemeteries

Saltwood Tunnel (North of), ARC SLT 99

The archive comprises data pertaining to an Anglo-Saxon cemetery consisting of 54 inhumations, to the West of the cemetery area (Saltwood Tunnel - ARC SLT 98c). A variety of grave goods were discovered in the burials, including weapons, jewellery, and glass beakers. The site, which stayed in continuous use from Bronze Age to the Mediaeval periods, is a good example of a local case study. The data from this archive can be used in conjunction with the other Anglo-Saxon burial site in Saltwood.

Anglo-Saxon Cemetery at Cuxton, Kent

The excavations at Cuxton yielded an Anglo-Saxon cemetery of 36 inhumations with both pagan and Christian features. The archive includes an extensive site report, a graves catalogue including finds from weapon graves, GIS files of the site layout with individual graves, and specialist reports for post-excavation assessments.

The Cleatham Anglo-Saxon Cemetery

The Cleatham Anglo-Saxon Cemetery is the third largest Anglo-Saxon cemetery in England. The archive includes detailed information about the urns and the grave finds from this cemetery, including a typology of the funerary vessels, and a separate database of illustrations and pictures of the grave goods. The archive also allows for inhumation, urn, and finds search within the project database.

Anglo-Saxon Cremation Cemetery at Lackford, Suffolk

The archive brings together site reports and publications from a large Anglo-Saxon cemetery excavated by different teams in multiple phases from the 40s onward, as well as finds data from the 2015-2016 excavations. The latter includes photographs of the site and finds, including individual photos of the funerary urns, before and after the post-excavation assessments.

Mucking Anglo-Saxon Cemeteries

Excavations at Mucking uncovered two Anglo-Saxon cemeteries with over 800 burials. The archive includes jewellery, textile, and demographic data, as well as site and specialist reports from the excavations. An extensive bibliographic list on Anglo-Saxon burial sites is provided alongside the project database.
