Dressel 43 fabric |
---|
Visual characteristicsThe fabric is a little variable but commonly occurs in a dense fine-textured hard fired clay, which is generally light red to buff in colour, or sometimes a lightish grey. The outer surface, which is often roughly finished, is often covered thin light coloured slip. |
PetrologyThere is some variety, as one should expect where there are several production sites. Commonly there are frequent subangular grains of quartz, usually below 0.3mm in size, together with flecks of mica, a little cryptocrystalline limestone and some red iron oxide. Occasionally small pieces of igneous and metamorphic rocks are also present. |
