Empoli fabric |

Visual characteristicsHard fired, darkish reddish-buff fabric |
PetrologyTwo main groups of fabric can be observed. The first one includes rather generic fabrics, with an iron-rich matrix and generally fine-grained inclusions (quartz, mica, and feldspar grains, and rare coarser gneiss fragments). These are related to the Arno valley productions, making use of the local alluvial clays. The fabrics of the second group are made from fossiliferous clays with coarse-grained temper, composed of ophiolitic and sedimentary elements. They are typical of the productions located in the Livornese area (Capelli et alii, 1999). Claudio Capelli |
