Comments specific to this amphora typeThe Narbonnensian variety is beige-buff in colour with a calcareous fabric and very fine inclusions that are difficult to discern by eye. The fabric is very homogenous from one workshop to another. Laubenheimer & Schmitt (forthcoming) discuss its geological composition. |

Visual characteristicsHard, moderately rough, generally fine-textured slightly micaceous fabric, normally cream or creamy pink (7.5YR 8/2-8/4) in colour. |
PetrologyThin sectioning shows some variability of fabric, as one would expect from an amphora form which was made over a fairly wide area of southern France. However, the principal inclusions are generally quartz, mica, limestone and more rarely metamorphic rocks such as quartzite, schist, etc. (Peacock, 1978; Peacock & Williams, 1986: Class 27). |
