Crypta Balbi 1 fabric

Visual characteristics

Hard sandy fabric with some white calcareous inclusions visible, orange (5YR 6/8) to reddish-yellow (5YR 6/6) in colour. In the hand-specimen the fabric appears similar to the Palestinian Late Roman 5/6 amphorae (Arthur, 1998).

Petrology

Fairly well rounded quartz grains dominate the fabric, which also contains pieces of fossiliforous limestone.
