Overview

This archive contains the tabular data compiled during the various analyses of artefactual and environmental evidence from the late Iron Age phase of occupation (Period 0) beneath the Roman Insula IX, Period 0, c.10BC to c. AD43.

The results of the excavation will be published as:

Fulford, M, Clarke, A, Durham, E and Pankhurst, N. 2018. Late Iron Age Calleva: The Pre-Conquest Occupation at Silchester Insula IX. London: Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies Britannia Monograph 32 (ISBN: 9780907764458)

The archive includes Excel spreadsheets of data produced by specialists associated with the project and provides additional data to that published in the monograph. While most of the tables list finds only associated with Period 0, Joanna Bird’s assessment of the pre-conquest arretine pottery imports includes a review of all such finds from previous excavations at Silchester and from Britain and a list of all known arretine potters’ stamps from Britain as a whole. The studies by Hilary Cool of the glass and by Nina Crummy of the brooches include all such examples of pre-Conquest (pre- c. AD43) finds from Insula IX, irrespective of their context. Colin Hasegrove’s study of the Iron Age coins assesses the finds from Insula IX in the context of all previously excavated Iron Age coins from Silchester, including a comparison between Insula IX and the IA coins from the forum basilica.
