In January 2019, Cotswold Archaeology undertook a Historic Building Recording covering a non-designated boundary wall at Northgate, Bridgwater, Somerset. It is believed that the wall was built in the early 19th century to mark the boundary of the Union Workhouse, which was previously located west of the wall.
The on-site recording work was undertaken in advance of alterations to a section of the wall including restoration and partially demolition to allow pedestrian entry to the proposed foodstore to the west of the wall. The present setting of the wall is along a public road bounded by small landscaped areas to the east, residential development to the north, playing fields to the west and commercial units to the south
The wall itself retains the higher ground to the west of it along the southern part of its length, and increases in height toward the north. In advance of any works to the wall, there were parts which were encompassed by trees and ivy, particularly in the area of the gate piers which were entirely hidden from view from the roadside. This was cleared between the site visits, allowing for the recording of the gate piers and wall.
