Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Overview

Cottam B: an Anglian and Anglo-Scandinavian settlement in East Yorkshire

The database aims to provide a complete catalogue of all the geo-referenced early medieval metal finds recovered to June 2015. It includes (a) all those finds logged by Haldenby and by other detector users working with him, or known to him; (b) key finds recovered during the University of York 1993 field-walking; (c) pottery collected by Haldenby and others during field-walking in 2010 and 2014; (d) all excavated small-finds (metal, lithics and worked bone and antler objects recovered during the two seasons of excavation in 1993 and 1995). As well as adding new finds made during the twenty years from 1995-2015 the opportunity has been taken to refine the descriptions of artefacts and definition of types, as well as to correct errors in the original list. For the early medieval finds the new database supersedes the catalogue provided in earlier publications [https://doi.org/10.11141/ia.10.4] and the digital archive [https://doi.org/10.5284/1000339]. In total there are 1081 artefacts in the new catalogue, 890 of which have coordinates. Of the total number of finds, 902 were recovered by Haldenby and other metal-detector users during metal-detecting or field-walking, whilst the remaining 179 were recovered during excavation or field-walking undertaken by the University of York.

The spreadsheet fields are as follows:

  1. Plot number – a unique number assigned to every object, initially derived from plotting of metal-detected finds by Dave Haldenby
  2. Museum accession number or Portable Antiquities Scheme prefix code
