Pillbox, no specification. Approx. 40ft from the railway bridge on the Liverpool to Ormskirk line, close to Durant's Cottages near Maghull Railway Station. It is a two storey brick built structure with 18in thick walls and stands 17ft high. The top 4 courses of bricks above the embrasures along with the 6in concrete roof have been removed. The overall height would have been 18ft 6in. The walls are 12ft x 21ft. There are two embrasures in both the 12ft long sides and 3 in each of the 21ft long sides. On the inside the upper floor has been removed. The floor joist sockets in the walls show that a wooden floor was situated 4.5ft below the embrasures. Allowing for the missing 4 courses above the embrasures this would give a height of 7ft from floor to ceiling. Access to this area must have been by means of a 'Jacob's Ladder'. The lower area appears to have been used for storage. It is a large open area with a wide entrance in one of the 12ft sides. It is uncertain if doors were fitted.
