Introduction

Excavations at Trichay Street, Exeter 1972-74 (Exeter archive site 42)

From June to December 1972 and from March to April 1973, the Exeter Museums Archaeological Field Unit undertook excavation on a plot of land between Pancras Lane and the rear tenement boundaries of North street. The plot was adjacent to Trichay Street and it was designated for development as part of the Guildhall Shopping Centre.

The remains of some early military activity, a legionary workshop (fabrica), a house, parts of two barracks, the fragmentary remains of perhaps two separate officers' quarters, and the metalling of two fortress streets at right angles to one another were recorded.

The final season in the Guildhall area revealed further military buildings dated c 50-70. Civilian occupation appears to have begun c 70-80 and to have continued unbroken to the present day. Waterbeer St. and Trickhay St. still reflect the Roman street pattern.
